Welcome to Singapore, the Garden City! Known for its cleanliness, safety, and seamless blend of cultures, it's an ideal destination for first-time international travelers. Before you embark on your adventure, here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth journey.
Pre-Travel Checklist
- SG Arrival Card: This is a mandatory electronic declaration that must be completed within three days of your arrival. It is completely free. Be sure to use the official Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) website or the 'MyICA Mobile' app to avoid third-party fees. Once submitted, you'll receive a confirmation email; a screenshot on your phone is sufficient.
- Connectivity: Consider purchasing a Singaporean SIM card online before your trip for convenience and better pricing. You can arrange to pick it up at Changi Airport upon arrival.
- Currency & Payments: While major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, it's wise to have some Singapore Dollars (SGD) on hand. Many of the city's famous hawker centres and smaller local shops are cash-only.
- What to Pack: Singapore's climate is tropical, so pack light, breathable clothing. However, indoor spaces are often heavily air-conditioned, so a light jacket or cardigan is a must. Sudden downpours are common, making a compact umbrella essential. Also, bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle (tap water is potable and bottled water is expensive), and an English-standard (Type G) power adapter.
Navigating the City
Singapore's public transport system is one of the world's best. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network is efficient and will get you to most major attractions.
- Payment Methods: The easiest way to pay is by using a contactless credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard) to tap in and out at the gantries. Alternatively, you can purchase an EZ-Link card at any MRT station or 7-Eleven convenience store. Note that your card must have a minimum balance of S$3 to enter the MRT.
- Buses: The bus network is also extensive. Like the MRT, you can use your contactless card or EZ-Link card. A key rule to remember is to tap your card when you board and when you alight to ensure you are charged the correct fare.
